HADDONFIELD'S RICH HISTORY

Haddonfield is one of the oldest communities in the region of what used to be known as West Jersey. The first European settler lived in the area in 1682, but it wasn’t until 1701 when a English Quaker woman named Elizabeth Haddon came to occupy the land purchased by her father, John Haddon. In 1721, the community of Haddonfield was established, and it quickly became a center of commerce for large South Jersey farms. The town experienced tremendous growth, and in 1764, a volunteer fire company known previously as Friendship Fire Company was established. Today, it is known as Haddon Fire Company No. 1, it is the second oldest volunteer fire company in continuous existence in the United States.

In 1777, the Indian King Tavern became the site where New Jersey legislators formally decided upon the state’s independence from British rule; in 1904, the Indian King Tavern became the first historic site purchased by the State of New Jersey. Haddonfield is also the site of the first nearly intact dinosaur skeleton ever found anywhere in the world, named Hadrosaurus foulkii. A replica of the skeleton sits in the town center, known to the community as “Haddy.”
