HISTORY OF NORTHERN LIBERTIES

Did you know that William Penn himself founded the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia? In the very beginning, it was not a part of Philadelphia. In the late 1600s, Northern Liberties Township came from available expanses of rural land north of Philadelphia - lands known as “liberty lands” that were granted to settlers based on the size of their land purchase. This is what gave it its name: Northern Liberties.

During the 18th century, the area began to develop as settlers moved beyond the city limits. It became a hub for artisans, craftsmen, and tradespeople. Mills, breweries, tanneries, and other factories sprang up, leading to significant population growth. It officially became a part of Philadelphia in 1854, called “Philadelphia’s first suburb.” In 1985, the Northern Liberties Historic District was created, where there lies many buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places in architectural styles including Italianate, Greek Revival, and Federal.
